DIY Gentle Face Cleanser Inspired By Lush's Angels On Bare Skin

DIY Gentle Face Cleanser Inspired By Lush's Angels On Bare Skin

The Lush Angels On Bare Skin face cleanser was one of the first products I ever bought from Lush some 15 years ago. I was sold on it when the sales associate demonstrated it for me on my hand which felt so incredibly soft afterwards. I was a total newbie (read not really into it at all) to “naturally made” and preservative free products at the time so the texture and consistency of the cleanser weirded me out a bit and I never really repurchased the cleanser.

Fast forward 15 years and I got a sudden inspiration during this quarantine time to make up a batch of this myself. I was in need of a face cleanser right away, didn’t want to go to the store and purchase one, and had what I felt were all the necessary ingredients on hand at home. The ingredients are certainly not an exact match to Lush’s version, but the result is quite similar, leaving my skin feeling oh so soft! I did add a bit of gentle soap into this mixture which I do not believe is in Lush’s version, so it allows a better cleanse and makeup removal in my opinion.

Be aware, this is a preservative free product, so you will want to make one small batch at a time. Each batch should last close to a month and should remain stable throughout that time as long as it is kept in an airtight jar in a cool environment with low water exposure in the jar. I have added the optional ingredient of Grapefruit Seed Extract in the recipe, which can extend the shelf life of the cleanser by a few weeks if you have it on hand to add. I personally would rather just make smaller batches and use them timely so as to always use fresh ingredients on my face to avoid any breakouts!

  1. Combine Almond Flour and Kaolin Clay into a bowl or tray. Mix together well.

  2. Add in Orange Peel Powder and mix together well.

  3. Next, add in Vegetable Glycerin, Castile Soap, and Essential Oils. Mix together with either a fork or clean hands. At this point the mixture will become quite dry and brittle, sticking to the fork or your hands. Once mixed, remove excess ingredients stuck to carefully from your hands or the fork back into the bowl/tray.

  4. Now you will want to add your Rose Water, 1 Tsp at a time, mixing after each teaspoon added. Once your mixture reaches a damp sand consistency and hold together fairly well, you have a finished product.

  5. For an optional step that will add a nice touch of gentle exfoliation, mix in dried lavender buds at this point. At this time you can also add 10 drops of Grapefruit Seed Extract if you wish to add a natural preservative.

  6. Roll mixture into a ball and store in an air tight container for up to 2 weeks(it can last longer if stored in a cool dry place).

  7. To use the product, simply pinch a small amount into the palms of your hands, add a small amount of water and rub hands together to create a milky slurry. Massage into skin for 30-60 seconds for gentle cleansing and exfoliation. Rinse away cleanser to reveal soft, smooth skin!
